If you have that special person in your life that LOVES fishing, you might be thinking about buying them a charter on your next vacation or just for fun, but how do you know which one to pick? I am wrapping up a day on the water with Captain Mark Rose from Bass Online out of Erie, PA and we crushed some smallies – What a great day!! I asked him as he looks at competitors in his field what he thinks people don’t think about when booking these services. The video of our wrap up is below, but here are the big take-aways.
Here we go:
1. Be out there every day
Fish follow bait. Bait mover every day. So if your charter is not on the water 5 days a week, they are not going to have a great starting point for getting you on fish right away. Plus, if they are doing this just on the weekend, they are not as vested in getting you on fish since they are not betting their house on the outcome.
2. Multiple Captains in the Network
Since you, for instance, can only be on one lake in Florida per day, and you may want to make a trip to different lakes, you are going to need a network of captains in that situation.
3. Equipment
Rods and Reels, along with hooks and artificial bait should be included in your trip. Like we did with Mark today when a rod needs reset, he is rigging while you are fishing and there are enough rods that you don’t need time off the water to switch up the rig.
4. Boat
There are different types of boats and you would not want a bass boat to fish for tuna. So make sure your captain has a newer and clean boat that is appropriate for your type of fishing.
5. Conveniences
If you’re like most of America and like to book online or like to pay with a credit card, then some of these conveniences you are going to want to look for. It is also a sign that this is the person’s full-time-job and that the experience is going to be pretty professional.
